Texas is the Best State for Veterans
o Texas is #1 for veteran-owned and #1 for women veteran-owned businesses.
o Texas is home to 1.5 million veterans (DOD/DMDC: June 2022; + VA).
o More women veterans than any other state (VA).
o Texas is home to 15 major military installations and the Army Futures Command.
o 22,000+ uniformed service members exit the military and remain or return to Texas each year.
o The veteran unemployment rate for February 2024 was 3.1%
Employers Hiring Veterans Benefit from Retention and Tax Credits
o Replacing an employee in a mid-range position can cost a company up to 20% of its annual salary. Hiring veterans reduce turnover and stabilize the workforce.
o Employers who hire veterans may earn up to $9,600 in federal tax credits through the Work Opportunity Tax Credit program (twc.texas.gov/wotc). Employers find value in the program, so during fiscal year 2023 TWC issued 4,961 certifications for veteran hires, for a potential tax savings of $23,245,600.
- We Hire Vets program recognizes employers whose workforce is made up of at least 10% veterans.
o On November 16, 2023, TWC assisted Workforce Solutions of Central Texas in recognizing 54 Texas employers with the We Hire Vets designation. This was the largest We Hire Vets employer ceremony to date.
o The We Hire Vets program has issued 1,154 We Hire Vets decals to deserving Texas employers.
