Laredo, TX – Friday, March 14, 2025 — The latest labor market report for the Laredo Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) highlights continued employment growth despite the rising unemployment rate. In January 2025, the civilian labor force expanded to 120,905, an increase of 4,166 compared to the previous year. Employment also grew, with 115,654 individuals working—3,956 more than in January 2024.

The Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) released its monthly unemployment rate report today, reflecting shifts in labor trends across the region.

However, the unemployment rate in Laredo rose to 4.3%, up from 3.7% in December 2024. This increase reflects seasonal employment shifts and broader labor market trends. Despite the rise, Laredo’s unemployment rate remains consistent with January 2024 levels and aligns with national trends.

Similarly, the unemployment rate in the WDA South Texas tri-county area also increased to 4.5%, up from 3.9% in December 2024.

Key industries driving employment include Trade, Transportation, and Utilities, the largest sector with 37,100 jobs. The Education and Health Services sector experienced the strongest annual growth, increasing by 5.5%, while the Government sector provided 25,000 jobs, reflecting a 2.0% year-over-year increase.

“The slight uptick in unemployment is not uncommon following the holiday season, but the long-term job growth in Laredo remains strong,” said Rogelio Treviño, Executive Director at Workforce Solutions for South Texas. “We are committed to supporting job seekers and employers as we continue to strengthen our local workforce.”

The Texas Labor Market Information (LMI) report for February 2025 is scheduled for release on Friday, March 28, 2025, at 9:00 a.m.
